Mt. Etna Volcano is one of the world's most active volcanoes, and the most active one in Europe.  Mt. Etna, standing tall at about 11,000, is one of the greatest and most beautiful volcano adventure tour destinations in Sicily.  It has more than 400 craters, split all over the Catania county.

We will drive from Messina, your port of call, to tour mount Etna through several Sicilian towns: Santa Venerina, Zafferana and Milo, and visit some old lava flows.  As we head up, you will see the different kinds of vegetation around.  At 2.000 meters (7.000 ft.), we will take a walk and visit the "Silvestri" craters (1986) and the latest new lava flows and craters that formed in 2001, 2002 and 2003.

During the tour, we will visit a family owned farm, where it is possible to taste the local wine, a selection of different types of honey (orange, lemon, eucalyptus, strawberry), almond pastries, olives and extra virgin olive oil.

We will then take you to one of the most well-known vineyards, the "Tenuta San Michele del Murgo", a wonderful property overlooking the sea and the volcano, where we will taste some of their local table wine (Optional).

On the way down, we will pass a wonderful pine tree forest, before we arrive in Taormina.   We will take you around this beautiful town, situated on a rocky plateau of very steep Monte Tauro, which dominates the Ionian coast from Capo Sant'Andrea to Capo Taormina with the Etna Volcano rising majestically in the background.

We will tour the downtown center of Taormina, which represents a variety of historical periods, from the early Greek settlements and the Roman age, to the remains of Byzantine and Medieval constructions up to the 15th Century Catalan buildings and 17th Century Baroque churches and Palaces.  Don't miss the breathtaking Greek Theatre facing the sea.  Stroll the main street "Corso Umberto" with several art and designers shops, Baroque churches and Palazzos.

Messina has painfully suffered both devastating earthquakes and World War II bombings.   Today, it still stands to tell the story of its impressive past and boasts some beautiful and important architecture and museums.  The Museo Regionale houses treasures that include works by Antonello da Messina and Caravaggio.  Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani in Piazza Catalani displays the eclecticism of 12th century Norman architecture, with rich decoration.  Outside the beautiful GA Montorsoli's Fontana d'Orione (1547) is the finest fountain of its kind from 16th century Sicily.  The fountain of Nettuno (1557) celebrates Messina's foundation and position in the world as a principle commercial port.

Our next destination is Tindaris, which began as a settlement back in the Bronze Age (about 1500 B.C) and was the most important Greek city in this vicinity. The town suffered the effects of a landslide at the end of the 1st Century AD, and an earthquake in 365 AD.   Most of what the visitor sees today was constructed during the Roman period.

We will tour the amphitheatre, which was built in the 4th century BC.  It has the ruins of simple temples and the so-called basilica, a fine example of Greco-Roman architecture begun in the 4th century B.C.  We will also see the very important Christian Sanctuary that sits high on the hill above the city.  It is famous for its black Madonna statue that draws visitors from afar, and gives it its name, Sanctuary of the black Madonna.

To arrive in Sicily and only enjoy Taormina would be a crime. Whilst beautiful, the real Sicily is on your doorstep waiting to be discovered.  We have chosen a magnificent drive along the northern coast line with wonderful roads overlooking the Ionian sea and over the Eolie's Islands.

Our first stop is Tindaris, which began as a settlement back in the Bronze Age (about 1500 B.C) and was the most important Greek city in this vicinity. The town suffered the effects of a landslide at the end of the 1st Century AD, and an earthquake in 365 AD.   Most of what the visitor sees today was constructed during the Roman period.

We will then tour Cefalù, a charming unspoiled village with winding, narrow, medieval streets and delightful restaurants overlooking a rocky coast.  It is dominated by a huge rock known as La Rocca, once the site of a Temple of Diane and one of the finest Norman-Arab-Byzantine Cathedrals.  The Duomo of Cefalù was begun in 1131 by Roger II and it was intended as the principal religious seat in Sicily. Though it failed to fulfill this function, the building's magnificence has never been eclipsed.

Its fine mosaics (1148), which feature an image of Christ Pantocrator in the apse, are often celebrated as the purest Byzantine works of art on Sicilian soil.

Also of interest is the Mandralisca museum, which houses an Antonello da Messina painting, a collection of coins, ceramics, vases, minerals and shells.

Time permitting, we will drive a little more along the coast line to get to the charming village of Santo Stefano di Camastra, filled of several ceramic shops and colored pottery.

A full day of true Sicilian experience. - A Step Back in Time in Savoca (used as a setting in the movie THE GODFATHER) and Forza D'Agrò:

Enjoy an introduction to the real Sicily exploring the towns of Savoca and Forza D'Agro with your local expert driver guide.

What you will experience today will not simply be an introduction to two typical Sicilian Towns but a real insight into the island, the locals, their culture and every day way of life not to mention a visit or two to some of the most beautiful hidden corners of this area -  way off the beaten track.

Arriving in Savoca is almost like taking a step back in time. Although recorded with its present name in 1415, the town probably dates back to the first half of the 12th century when a Norman Fortress was built there.  Savoca is not a touristy town. It is a simple every day "local" town set on the hillside of the foothills of the S. Peloritiani.   What makes it different from the other towns is the fact that this was where Al Pacino and the cast shot the movie The Godfather.  We will follow their footsteps and visit the places that were so often shown throughout the movie.   While in town we will stop for a Lemon Granita at the famous bar "VITELLI" on the corner of the town, one of Coppola's favorites spots, and seen many times throughout the film. Then make your way to the church of St. Lucy where the scene of the wedding between Apollonia and Michael was shot!

From Savoca, we will visit Forza d'Agrò, which is without a doubt one of the best examples of a typical village of the Province of Messina.  Its position provides the most incredible views and its medieval streets is just charming.  Here we have tradition, culture, history, art all awaiting you.

You will also tour Taormina, the highlight of this tour.

We will take you around this beautiful town, situated on a rocky plateau of very steep Monte Tauro, which dominates the Ionian coast from Capo Sant'Andrea to Capo Taormina with the Etna Volcano rising majestically in the background.
