Your private tour will take you from Florence through the Arno Valley and we will enter into one of the most picturesque regions of Italy called Umbria. This is considered the green heart of the country for the very colourful landscapes and the beautiful vegetation mainly composed of olive trees and vines. We will pass along the 4th largest lake of Italy called Lago Trasimeno, historically famous for being the place where Hannibal defeated the Romans in 247 B.C. You will be also able to see very closely the capital of this region, Perugia, famous to be a beautiful Etruscan town and to be still today the capital of the chocolate. Only 20 minutes east of Perugia and visible for miles around, Assisi sweeps the flanks of Monte Subasio in a broad curve, like a pink ship sailing over the green sea of a valley below. This is Umbria’s most famous town and one of the loveliest. Sister city of San Francisco and Bethlem, Assisi is a very important attraction for thousands of pilgrims. Assisi is a great well preserved example of Roman and medieval town. St. Francis and St. Claire give a religious importance and a special atmosphere to this wonderful city. You will enjoy a guided tour starting from the higher part of the town, stopping at the church of St. Claire, a great example of Italian Gothic architecture containing precious paintings and the famous crucifix venerated by St. Francis and his body in the crypt. We will move towards the old Roman forum, today called piazza del comune (municipality) where you can see the 1st century B.C. Roman temple of Minerva, the 13th century Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and the 14th century Palazzo dei Priori. We will finally take the main road that will take you downhill to the main attraction of Assisi, the Basilica. The Basilica, started 2 years after the death of the saint (1228) is composed of two churches built one above the other and a crypt which houses the Saint’s tomb. The lower Basilica was decorated by the greatest painters of the 13th and 14th century: Cimabue, Giotto, the Lorenzetti brothers and Simone Martini. The upper Basilica is adorned by Giotto’s frescoes illustrating the life of St Francis. You will enjoy wandering around the beautiful streets and take advantage of the perfect position of the town for a fantastic of the Umbrian valley.
