Enjoy a private guided tour of Lucca and Pisa with an
English-speaking guide. You will be heading west towards the coast, 50
miles from Florence and stop in Pisa. Pisa has an interesting history.
It was a Roman colony from the 2nd century B.C. and a naval and
commercial port. In the middle ages, it became a maritime republic,
rivalling Genova, Amalfi and Venice. It's peak came in the 12th and 13th
century, by which time Pisa controlled Corsica, Sardinia, and most of
the mainland coast as far south as Civitavecchia. Most of the city's
finest buildings date from this period, when the distinctive Pisan-Romanesque
architectural style flourished. Since the beginning of the 15th century,
the city was governed by Florence, whose Medici rulers re-established
the University of Pisa, where Galileo, Pisa's most famous native, was
once a teacher.
Your custom tour of Pisa will also take you to "Campo dei Miracoli", a
large grassy piazza containing Pisa's cathedral, the baptistery, the
cemetery and the very famous leaning tower. You will wander around this
beautiful square and enjoy the amazing architecture of the buildings
around.
Before lunch, you will head to Lucca, the birthplace of composer Giacomo
Puccini. Lucca is the most graceful, one of the most charming and
elegant cities of Tuscany's provincial capitals. It is set inside a ring
of a well-reserved Renaissance walls. The wall is wide enough to hold
small parks and a path along the top. Founded by the Etruscans, Lucca
became a Roman colony in 180 B.C. During the 12th century, it enjoyed a
period of prosperity based on the silk trade. Lucca remained an
independent republic for over 500 years, till the arrival of Napoleon
who created the principality of Lucca.
The sites in Lucca include charming squares, a well preserved city
walls, and the beautiful churches of San Martino and San Frediano.
Everything is inside the very wide city walls with a circumference of
2,5 miles. In Lucca, from west to east you can clearly recognize its
Roman past. There are several remains from Roman times in the medieval
town, the area of the market square.
You will have free time to stroll around this charming town, walk the
city walls, visit sites such as the cathedral and the church of San
Frediano (where you can view the body of St. Zita in a glass coffin),
Napoleon's square, the Ampitheatre square (Elliptical shaped Roman
coliseum on which houses have now been built), the great shopping street
Via Fillungo. You can also climb the Guinigi tower.
