Enjoy a private guided tour of Montalcino and Pienza with an
English-speaking guide. You will leave Florence early and head towards
the province of Siena, passing through the so-called "superstrada del
palio", named after the famous bare back horse race which takes place in
Siena, and through the most beautiful and important area of the Chianti
wine region. You will see a spectacular landscape composed of vineyards
and olive trees and you will get a chance to take the Cassia road, one
of the 10 Roman consular roads still in use today dating back to the 2nd
century B.C.
Your custom private guided tour of Montalcino and Pienza will first take
you to the town of Montalcino, a around the village, visit the 14th
century fortress, the cathedral and the little streets from little
village of Etruscan origin lying on a hill and dominating the whole
valley around. Montalcino is known all over the world for being the
birthplace of one of the finest wines of Italy, the Brunello. You will
find plenty of wine shops around selling this fabulous red wine. Your
Montalcino tour will give you time to stroll which you have wonderful
sights of the landscape.
You will continue your guided tour of Montalcino to Fattoria dei Barbi
(or similar), one of the oldest and most respected winery in Italy.
Since 1960, its cellars have been open to some visitors who have passed
through their doors and witnessed the meticulous care and attention they
put into their Brunello wine. You will have a guided tour of the wine
cellars followed by a wine tasting. After the tour, you may eat lunch at
their restaurant Taverna de Barbi which serves traditional Montalcinese
dishes.
After lunch, the next stop of your private tour is the charming town of
Pienza, located in the middle of the Orcia Valley which is a spectacular
area that stretches between Montepucliano and San Quirico. You will be
treated to beautiful lands with cypress trees and vegetation perfectly
laid out.
Pienza is as complete a Renaissance creation as any in Italy. Pope Pius
II, Aeneas Piccolomini, conceived Pienza, his birthplace, as a Utopian
"New Town". The construction of Pienza began in 1459 and the architect
who worked on all the major buildings was Bernardo Rossellino under the
guide of Leon Battista Alberti, the great theorist of Renaissance art,
building and town planning.
You will have free time to wander through the lovely streets of Pienza.
Note the street names: via dell'amore (street of love), via del bacio
(kiss), via della fortuna (street of luck). One street, the beautiful
via del Casello, has a spectacular panoramic view of the Orcia Valley.
You may also enjoy the great shopping area in Corso Rossellino or visit
the beautiful cathedral and the Pope Palace or simply just enjoy the
great atmosphere. Pienza is known all over Italy for its great pecorino
cheese that you can find and smell all around.
