Your custom private tour of Siena will take you through the so-called "Superstrada
del Palio", a scenic road in the middle of the Chianti region. Along the
drive, you will see the American Cemetery, built after the second world
war, and several vineyards of the best wine producers of the Chianti
region, the so called "Black Rooster". Before reaching Siena, you will
see the fortified village of Monteriggioni, perched high up on a hill.
Built on 3 hills in the middle of the "via Francigena" (pilgrimage
road), Siena is one of the jewels of Tuscany. It has an outstanding
Gothic Duomo and another important church, San Domenico, which houses
the skull of St. Caterine. It also has one of the most beautiful squares
in Italy, il "Campo", where the famous Palio horse race is held twice a
year.
Your private guided tour of Siena will take you the different
neighbourhood, beautiful squares and important churches, which you may
visit on your own. You will have some to explore on your own, have
lunch, or shop. Siena has many specialty shops for the great shopping
around the square and in the main street called Via Banchi di Sopra.
Local food specialty include the Panforte (a cake with dried fruits and
sugar), the Sapori (very tasty biscuits with almonds), the Pici (a
typical pasta from the area).
Later in the day, you will also tour the medieval walled city of San
Gimignano, less than an hour away. You'll have the first sight of the
famous towers of San Gimignano from afar. There were originally 72
towers but only 15 remains today. You will explore San Gimignano with
your English-speaking guide. You will stop in the main squares, Piazza
della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo. You will have free time to visit La
Collegiata church, the civic museum, the fortress, the torture museum
and climb the big tower called Torre Grossa. Great shopping
opportunities are in the streets of San Giovanni and San Matteo. San
Gimignano is well known for its great white wine called "Vernaccia" and
for the "Zafferano" (Saffron). Make a point to stop for gelato at one of
the best Gelateria in Italy in Piazza della Cisterna. They won an award
as the best ice cream in 2007.
