Piedmont literally means "foot of the mountain," and
when you see the majestic green Alps that tower
over its French and Swiss borders, you'll understand
why. This picturesque region may not be Italy's
most famous, but Piedmont's many charming valleys
and vineyards should put it on the traveler's
map.
Piedmont boasts more lakes and hills per square
mile than in Tuscany, and some 170,000 registered
acres of vineyards, many cultivating nebbiolo,
the region's premier grape. Piedmont is the destination
in Italy for red wine lovers, who come here to
taste the delectable Barolos and Barbarescos
from the source. Meaty pastas, artisanal cheeses
and wild mushrooms, particularly Alba's famous
white truffles, are among the delicacies you'll
want to try here, along with some fruits of the
vine, of course.
Piedmont's capital, Turin, hosted the 2006 Winter
Olympics, but the 19th century city was long
known for its arts and industries before it was
known for sports. As a tourist in Turin, you
are likely to have this hidden gem of a city
to yourself.
