This morning, your private tour guide will take
you to Avignon, one of the most charming cities
in southern France.
Surrounded by imposing city walls, Avignon is
well known as the residence of the Pope in the
14th century. You will visit the awesome Palace
of the Popes and enjoy the enormous banquet rooms,
original frescoes and floor tiles, and other
details in its interior. The Palace paints a
vivid portrait of the Pope’s life in that era.
You will also visit the famous 12th century
Pont Bénazet. This bridge was originally composed
of 22 arches, but was almost completely destroyed
in a 1668 flood. In one of the remaining arches
you can still visit the little chapel of St.
Nicholas.
In the afternoon, we will drive north of Avignon
to Chateauneuf-du-Pape, an area famous for its
vineyards. You will enjoy a visit to a winery
followed by a wine tasting.
