Les Baux de Provence, Cathedrale D'Image With Wine & Cheese Tasting
Les Baux tour Includes: Private transportation and English
speaking tour guide, admission to Cathedrale D'Images, taxes, parking and tolls.
Note: Organized lunch is recommended for big
groups. If you book a tour on market day in St.
Remy (typically Wednesday), passing through St.
Remy is sometimes not possible. An alternate
route will be taken and the sites on the way
to Les Baux will differ. Also, all our
private tours can be fully customized.
This privately guided shore excursion features
a visit to Les Baux-de-Provence, famous for its
medieval hilltop castle and village carved right
out of the cliff face. You will take the scenic
route to Les Baux, making several interesting
detours along the way, including the little chapel
of St. Sixte; the beautiful town of St. Remy;
the St. Paul Mausoleum, where Van Gogh spent
the last year of his life and painted around
150 canvases; and assorted Roman ruins.
Finally you will cross the scenic Alpilles hill
range with its vineyards and olive field to reach
Les Baux. The rock-top fortress belonged to the
rebellious Les Baux family in the Middle Ages.
The dramatic rocky cliffs on which the town was
built are said to have inspired Dante in his
vivid descriptions of Purgatory in the Inferno.
Cars are banned from the steep, winding streets,
so you will have a brisk walk up the hill to
the sights.
After some free time for shopping or to explore
the village, groups signing up to include lunch
on your tour will enjoy a traditional lunch featuring
a variety of local cheeses, cured meat platters
and other Provençal specialties, with wine tasting
(three to four different local AOC wines). The
wine tasting will either be in the beautiful
winery chateau Estoublon, which is also an olive
oil producer in the Baux Valley; in a farm with
a winery on the premises; or in a winery situated
in an old quarry.
Les Baux has an incredible museum called the
Cathedral of Images, “housed” in an abandoned
limestone quarry. A slideshow set to music featuring
thousands of artworks are projected onto 20-foot
walls using a series of 50 projectors, with a
symphonic soundtrack. This breathtaking attraction
blends the best of culture and nature. A unique
and memorable experience!
