Days closed: The Vatican museum is closed on Sundays, except the last Sunday of the month. Expect large crowds then. The basilica is also closed every Wednesday because of the scheduled “Audience with the Pope.”

Duration & Itinerary: Shore Excursion to Rome starts with a pick up at cruise ship dock at the Civitavecchia port. Drop off at first site, either the Vatican or Colosseum. Travel between Vatican & Colosseum using taxis with the guide. Tour of Vatican and Ancient Rome with a local licensed tour guide for 5 hours. After the tours with the guide, free time on your own to explore, have a quick lunch or visit famous sights like the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona. There will be a designated meeting place where your driver will pick you up for your return to the ship. It is possible to have a guide with you for the entire time you are in Rome. Inquire.

NOTE: Because of time constraint, only brief visits to the Vatican and Colosseum to allow for some free time to explore other sites on your own or with our guide. This guided, private shore excursion from Civitavecchia to Rome combines two must-sees of Italy: Ancient Rome and the Vatican. This classic shore excursion begins with a three-hour guided tour of the Vatican Museum and St. Peter's Basilica. The Vatican houses the wealthiest private collection of masterpieces, showcased in rooms with walls decorated by Raffaello. The real masterpiece, however, is next door: Michelangelo's painting of the Sistine Chapel, which unexpectedly revolutionized the world's idea of art. The chapel is still shaping the future of the Papacy: this is where the cardinals lock themselves in to elect a new Pope after the former one has passed away. NOTE: There is also an Egyptian collection, which includes a couple of mummies, that may be of interest to younger visitors. The magnificent and breathtaking complex spans back to 4th century BC, when it was commissioned by Emperor Constantine, though the new cathedral took over 100 years and all of Italy’s greatest artists to build it. The basilica’s vast collection of art includes masterpieces by Bernini, Baldacchino and Michelangelo.

Your day trip from Civitavecchia continues back in time to ancient Rome, where you will tour the Colosseum (approximately 1 hour). Time permitting, visit the Roman Forum, which dates back to 6th century BC, you traipse through the ruins of numerous temples, basilicas, palaces, arches and shops. The first Roman civilization began here, in turn becoming the administrative and commercial center of ancient Rome. Other sites of Ancient Rome here include Arch of Constantine and Piazza del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo. This guided shore trip of Rome will also tour the Colosseum, the entertainment center of ancient Rome, where 50,000 citizens would gather to watch the gladiators do battle.

Afterwards, you will have free time to tour Rome on your own, and visit the famous piazzas or relax in a café or trattoria for lunch before returning to Civitavecchia dock.
