This tour will follow the Northern coast of
Sicily to the beautiful town of Cefalù and
its beautiful surrounding area with your local
expert tour guide. The tour
begins with a visit to a town of Bagheria,
famous for its Baroque villas. You will visit
the most unusual of the bunch, built by the
Prince of Palagonia, who was obsessed with
monsters and mirrors. This famous villa, built
in the 1700s, is very similar to the Mediterranean-style
Palladio Villa in Venetobut.
Your guided tour of Cefalù,
a charming village with winding, narrow streets
and delightful restaurants overlooking a rocky
coast. Cefalù is dominated by a huge megalith
known as "La Rocca" - once the site
of a Temple of Diane and one of the finest
Norman-Arab-Byzantine cathedrals. The Duomo,
begun in 1131 by Roger II, was intended as
the principal religious seat in Sicily. Though
it never fulfilled this function, the building's
magnificence has never been eclipsed. The Duomo’s
fine mosaics, most notably one depicting Christ
Pantocrator in the apse, are often celebrated
as the purest Byzantine works of art on Sicilian
soil.
You will round out your tour of Cefalù with
a visit to the Mandralisca museum, feturing
an Antonello da Messina painting and a vast
collection of coins, ceramics, vases, minerals
and shells.
