ALL OUR SHORE EXCURSIONS OR PRIVATE TOURS CAN BE CUSTOMIZED TO MEET YOUR UNIQUE GOALS. Our private tours in Provence are perfect for families with kids, seniors and those with some mobility issues.
This morning, your private guide will take you
to a lovely area called the Chaîne des
Alpilles, a small mountain range in Provence,
located about 12 miles south of Avignon.
The range is actually an extension of the much
larger Luberon range.
Although it is not particularly high - only
1,270 feet at its highest point - the Alpilles
range stands out as it rises dramatically from
the flat plain of the Rhône valley.
The Alpilles were immortalized in art by Vincent
van Gogh, who painted many images of
the landscapes here during his time in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence on
the north side of the mountains.
The 12 municipalities covering the Alpilles
area are classified as a Regional Park, placing
the area under the protection of the EU’s Natura
2000 Environmental Protection Plan.
You will start your private tour in charming St. Remy, known for its well-preserved
Roman ruins, including a grand arch and a mausoleum.
Next door you will see the psychiatric hospital
where Van Gogh spent a year after cutting off
his ear. Your private tour of the Alpilles will continue
in the town of Les Baux, a rock-top fortress
which belonged to the rebellious family of
the same name in the Middle Ages. The dramatic
rocky cliffs on which the town was built are
said to have inspired Dante in his vivid descriptions
of Purgatory in
the Inferno.
OPTIONAL: Les Baux has an incredible museum called the
Cathedral of Images, “housed” in an abandoned
limestone quarry. A slideshow set to music
featuring thousands of artworks are projected
onto 20-foot walls using a series of 50 projectors,
with a symphonic soundtrack. This breathtaking
attraction blends the best of culture and nature. Seasonal - during warm weather. Inquire.
