This morning, your private tour guide will
take you to one of the most charming cities
in southern France: Avignon. You will also have a private guided tour of Chateauneuf du Pape and enjoy wine tasting in this beautiful part of Provence.
Surrounded by imposing city walls, Avignon
is well known as the residence of the Pope
in the 14th century. Your guided tour of Avignon will also take you to visit the awesome
Palace of the Popes and enjoy the enormous
banquet rooms, original frescoes and floor
tiles, and other details in its interior. The
Palace paints a vivid portrait of the Pope’s
life in that era.
Your Avignon tour also includes a visit the famous 12th century
Pont Bénazet. This bridge was originally composed
of 22 arches, but was almost completely destroyed
in a 1668 flood. In one of the remaining arches
you can still visit the little chapel of St.
Nicholas.
In the afternoon, the private tour continues with a drive north of Avignon
to Chateauneuf-du-Pape, a medieval hillside village famous for
its vineyards. You can tour the ruins of the old stone castle here. After walking the sights, you will be ready for the final stop of the day: a huge chocolate and wine boutique. You will sample the wares here with the assistance of a professional sommelier or chocolatier. The tasting includes three wines matching five different chocolates.
