This morning your private tour guide will take
you to discover one of the most picturesque
areas of Provence while you tour through the Luberon mountains. The
region of these majestic peaks, more than 3,500
feet above sea level, offer an endearing combination
of lonely wild spaces and charming little villages.
Much of the Luberon range is protected as
a parkland, where you can find more than 1,000
different species of plants and incredible
oak and cedar forests that are home to eagles,
hawks, snakes, beavers and the biggest lizards
in Europe, among other fauna.
Luberon was also the stage for the first battles
between Catholics and Protestants in the 16th
century.
The first stop of this private custom tour
of Provence will be the lovely town of Lourmarin, where
you will tour a stately Renaissance castle;
if you visit on a Friday, your tour guide will take you to a local market. You will then cross the mountains to reach
the lovely town of Bonnieux, known for its 12th century
ramparts and church, from which you can enjoy
a gorgeous view of the surrounding landscape. Bonnieux also has a lovely market on Fridays you can visit.
Your Provence guided tour will continue with your tour guide towards
another charming town called Lacoste, where
you can tour the ruins of the Marquis de Sade
Castle.
Your guided tour will conclude in Roussillon, Provence’s
most colorful village, with its brilliant red
and ocher cliffs. Lacoste and Roussillon both have markets on Thursday mornings; a tour can be arranged. A tasting of wine, olive oil, jam and/or other specialties from Provence will round out this fabulous day trip.
