This private guided tour will take you through Naple's
National Archeological Museum’s extensive collections
of Greek and Roman antiquities, particularly
artifacts from Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum.
The building itself that houses the museum
is an architectural and historical gem, built
in the 17th century.
The museum contains over 100 exhibits, including
a collection of engraved gems and a well-known
classical sculpture collection, largely carved
from the famous Farnese marble. The special
exhibits include the Egyptian Collection and
the Mosaics Collection, which includes a piece
from the House of the Faun in Pompeii comprised
of more than 1.7 million pieces.
The museum’s remarkable painting collection
showcases frescoes taken from buildings buried
by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. These
fragments represent a compendium of subject
matter: mythological and literary themes, still
lifes and landscapes, portraits, scenes of
daily life and religious ceremonies related
to the household gods.
Don’t miss a visit to the “Secret Room” of
Roman erotica, depicting the treatment of sexuality
in Roman times. The so-called “Cabinet of Obscene
Object” was created in 1817 to bring together
about a hundred miscellaneous items, only to
be viewed by important visitors of the male
sex on obtaining the relevant authorization
from the Ministry.
