Day 1: Travel by train to Avignon, Walking tour of Avignon and Pont du Gard, Overnight in Avignon

Your privately guided trip to Provence begins in Avignon, where your driving guide picks you up from the train station. Avignon, home of the papacy in the 14th century, claims the largest Gothic palace in Europe: le Palais des Papes.

Your guide will take you on a private walking tour where you will discover Avignon’s rich architectural heritage, from its Bishoprics to clock towers. Your private tour of Avignon includes a visit to the famous 12th century Pont Bénazet. This bridge, originally composed of 22 arches, was almost completely destroyed in a 1668 flood. You can still visit the little chapel of St. Nicholas in one of the remaining arches.

For lunch, you can sample your way through one of Avignon’s indoor markets, featuring tasty tapenades, cured meats, organic breads and local cheeses prepared in the Provençal way.

After lunch, your private tour of Provence continues to Pont du Gard. This immaculately preserved Roman aqueduct at the rim of Gardon Canyon supplied running water to the city of Nimes and beyond. This ancient marvel of engineering has endured two millennia, attracting visitors from all over the world. Your guide will also take you to a thousand-year-old olive tree just steps away from this magnificent monument. Here you can admire the canyon valley and follow the flow of the Gard River, tributary of the Rhône.
You will return to Avignon in the late afternoon.

Day 2: Guided Tour of Les Baux and Arles, travel by train back to Paris

This morning you will enjoy a guided tour of Les Baux, a medieval town in Provence. Les Baux is known for the viewpoint where you will see the remains of a medieval hilltop castle and village carved right out of the cliffs. As cars are banned from the steep, winding streets, you will have a brisk walk up the hill to the castle.
Next you will visit the 2,000-year-old city of Arles, where your private tour guide will introduce you to its ancient Roman monuments. You will also visit sights -- Langlois Bridge, Café la Nuit, Sanatorium -- made famous by artist Vincent Van Gogh. The artist painted some 300 pieces in the 15 months he lived here, making his time in Arles Van Gogh’s most prolific period.
At the end of your guided tour of Provence, you will take the train back to Paris.
